Scope of Work

Installation of valves and connections to pump stations at Tomago and Williamtown

Significant Achievements

  • Traffic control was necessary for most sections of the work as the pipe alignment generally followed the road shoulder.  Traffic control was arranged by Daracon in consultation with RTA, Council and Hunter Water.  No incidents occurred during the term of the project.
  • Numerous design changes were made during the project as unforeseen obstacles to the alignment were encountered.  Daracon dealt with these in a partnering spirit by moving production to another section to give time for resurvey and design.
  • Public utilities were a constant consideration where the pipeline followed the corridor between boundary and road shoulder.  Cable locators from Telstra and Daracon were used to mark conduits that were potholed before any excavation took place.
  • Community liaison was a daily requirement as the pipeline crossed numerous driveways and other curtilage.  Daracon’s work team approached property owners well ahead of construction to discuss any special requirements for access, timing or similar limits.
  • The work was programmed around peak traffic flows at school holiday time and Daracon’s efforts were so successful that RTA relaxed their requirements later in the project.
  • Deep trenching was required in some areas to provide for future road widening and this created problems with high water tables and the need for constant de-watering.  Water was directed through silt fences to eliminate pollution of adjoining waterways.
  • Acid sulphate soils were known to occur in some sections and strict procedures were implemented to segregate suspect material and reuse it only according to Hunter Water guidelines.  Water was pumped from trenches in suspect areas only after a quality check.
