Project Details
Scope of Work
- Major slope stablisation
- Four concrete structures
- 20,000m of stormwater lines
- 900mm watermain relocation
Significant Achievements
- The project bisected a densely populated area that contained residences, golf course and university. These presented specific constraints that required careful negotiation and the application of special construction methods.
- SEPP14 Wetland traversed the site requiring strict environmental controls and constant monitoring to ensure that pollution did not occur. Special consideration to endangered species such as the rare prickled duck and platypus required innovative construction procedures.
- BHP Technical Laboratory adjoined the site and contained instruments sensitive to vibration. Arrangements were made with BHP to limit vibration and even stop certain types of work when this equipment was needed.
- The route paralleled a major Hunter Water Main ( 900mm) and where it passed close to cutting faces additional support was provided by installing soldier beams to within +/-20mm across the cutting. Rock bolts of up to 20m in length were used to secure the soldier beams in place.
- Multiple contractors were generally on site require coordination and careful programming to prevent delays and safety problems
- The route interfered with the daily passage of pupils to four nearby schools. Safe crossings were provided at several locations and work programmed to avoid those areas at critical times
- The corridor was very narrow having been reserved for many years and development allowed to take place right up to the boundary. This presented problems in material management and work programming because all activity had to be confined to the corridor.
