Metford Rd Rail Underpass
Client Information
ARTC (indirectly) & Arenco (directly)
Scope of Work
The works included 40,000m3 of bulk earthworks which involved removal of material from below the newly constructed underpass structure. Works forming part of the Contract also encompassed installation of stormwater drainage systems including construction of a pump delivery pit with 100,000 litre storage capacity. Associated with these works was the installation and commissioning of 2 x 41KVA submersible pumps imported from Finland.
Other elements within the project included subsurface drainage with both bound and unbound gravel pavements, deep lift and wearing course asphalt, vegetation and landscaping activities with adherence to strict environmental requirements. Modification of the Raymond Terrace Road roundabout including temporary roads and significant management of traffic was also undertaken.
Significant Achievements
Daracon was charged with the responsibility of carrying out a rapid excavation of material whilst abiding by strict level conformance requirements to allow the stringently time constrained installation of the pre-cast components of the underpass bridge. Commencing at 3.00am, 2500m3 of material was successfully excavated in a 5 hour period which set the ground work in place for the successful construction of the Underpass Structure.
The project achieved the high expectation that the local community was promised with the road opening ahead of program which removed traffic delays at the level crossing and provided a significantly safer section of carriageway. The Project included close and yet successful liaison with Representatives from Arenco, the Project Client being Australian Rail and Track Corporation along with the Roads and Traffic Authority and Maitland City Council as well as the local land holder CSR/PGH. Other stakeholders associated with the project included Local and State Politicians, Energy Australia, Agility Gas, EPA and Workcover. The project concluded incident free.
