Significant Achievements

The following significant construction achievements were met on this contract:

  • Full construction of 1.8km of rail embankment up to and including capping Layer. Quantities included:
    • 12,000m3 of cut to spoil
    • 3,400m3 of imported general fill
    • 4,600m3 of imported structural fill
    • 1,400m3 of imported capping material
  • Management of water runoff due to 25 days of wet weather and a massive land catchment that drained to one point within the work area.
  • Construction of a 120m long rock line outlet trapezoidal drain whilst controlling runoff through this work area.
  • Construction of a rail bridge that crossed an active local road that was kept open at all times and only restricted during placement of the bridge planks.
  • Construction of a 150m long gabion retaining wall that involved coordination between the gabion wall subcontractor and the earthworks contractor (Daracon) during the backfill and progressive levels of the installed wall.
  • Construction of extensive drainage and bridging layers under the rail embankment formation.
  • Construction alongside an active rail line that shared coal and passenger trains.  Work was performed completely under the supervision of Protection Officers and thus was restricted.
  • Construction of the two turnouts at each end connecting the loop to the main line under fulltime strict rail occupancy.
