As the chosen contractor for the Tourle Street Bridge, Daracon Group again displayed its enviable ability to give value for money on its construction projects by completing the work three months ahead of schedule. This was achieved by using innovative techniques to place the bridge girders while managing critical environmental issues on both land and in the river.
All work was done without disruption to the 24,000 vehicles that use the existing bridge everyday. The approaches to the new bridge were built first which is not the usual sequence but it enabled through traffic to run continuously on staged diversions. Then the bridge was built without interfering with the road users until the day of opening when the traffic was simply switched across onto the already complete approaches.
Bridge girders were installed using a launching truss gantry system instead of a river based crane. Its effectiveness exceeded expectations and it will now be used on the Third Hunter River Crossing at Maitland.
